I'm not sure if you are able to shed any light on the situation or not but I'll ask just in case.

I'm testing out the plugin WP Document Revisions and Role Scoper's ability to apply permissions to the custom post type it creates.

RS sees the post type and I can apply restrictions and roles as normal, however the default roll setting is not honoured when a new post is created.

Example:

1. Assign a group to the default role to Document Editors.
2. Create new document post as member of group.
3. Document Editor role for the new post is not set.
