Hello

I have been using RS for years, rellay enjoying and loving the plugin. Either after upgrading to 3.1 the problems have been insolvable for me.

I have searched and read through the forum without any luck.

Here is what happens:

- I can install and activate plugin (but I have to disable WP Super Cache to be able to enter admin interface)

- I have subscribers that I want to give the ability to edit their own pages. So I give them the WP role of subscriber.

- I go to their respecive pages and tick checkboxes to make them editors.

- If I log in with their users I get the overview only showing the pages they should edit. When I click edit, the page goes white (some webbrowsers show "Internal server error 500″

I have tried disabling alot of plugins no luck so far. Also I am using flexxtheme professional, could there be a problem using the plugin with this theme?

Hope to get som useful input from the more experienced so I can get the plugin running again.

Can you let me know of any recent entries in your web server's php error log?

What RS version are you running?

Hello Kevin. Thanks for the quick reply. I turned on PHP error log and when I click edit on the wanted page. This error log shows:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 77824 bytes) in /customers/mydomain.com/mydomain.com/httpd.www/wp-content/plugins/role-scoper/admin/item_roles_ui_rs.php on line 313

The RS version is 1.3.27, most recent I believe.

Just trying to log in to the wp-admin page (I get in), gives me the following log entry:

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /customers/mydomain.com/mydomain.com/httpd.www/wp-config.php:79) in /customers/mydomain.com/mydomain.com/httpd.www/wp-includes/functions.php on line 851 Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /customers/mydomain.com/mydomain.com/httpd.www/wp-config.php:79) in /customers/mydomain.com/mydomain.com/httpd.www/wp-includes/functions.php on line 852

Hello again. Forget the last warning in my previous post. There were some blank lines in the wp-config.php that caused the "Cannot modify heater information…."

The first problem, with editing pages remains.

Kevin - The last update so far…

I am a noob when it comes to the underlying structure, PHP code etc..

But when I actually continued reading the error log and saw "memory limit exceeded", I continued deactivating plugins. And now it is working. Sorry to have bothered You with this total noob question.

So again thank You for an amazing plugin. We are trying to get a updated website runinng for our church. This plugin is one of the keys for us to make it work. Because now I can give certain people the ability to edit certain pages, without fear of them ruining everything else.

Thanks again

Your brother in Christ

Dag, many WordPress installations increase the PHP memory limit above the default 32M. Unless you host has imposed their own limit, you can do so by adding this to wp-config.php above the "stop editing" line:

define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '64M');

By the way, my first motivation to develop the code that became Role Scoper was to make WordPress more suited to shared creation and editing of pages by the local body of Christ I was a part of.

Hello again.

Our webhosting service limits the PHP memory to 32MB. What are the typical tricks I should use to limit memory usage?

And one last thing.

Activating WP Super Cache still causes the whole website to go blank. What would be the most likely cause of this?

How much memory are you using for the page edit form without Role Scoper installed? Try the WP Overview plugin to find out.

Make sure WP Super Cache is configured to disable the cache for logged-in users.

Set the following Role Scoper options (Roles > Options) to minimize memory usage:

  • Features tab > Content Maintenance > Filter Users Dropdown DISABLED
  • Features tab > Role Assignment > Role and Restrictions set by Content Admins only
  • Advanced tab > Role Assignment Interface > Indicate blended roles DISABLED
  • Advanced tab > Custom Columns > DISABLE ALL

Thanks for the tips. Now I can have Super Cache running without it crashing. I installet the WP overview (dashboard widget). Is there any certain trick to how I use it to find out memomy usage on page edit?

It seems as if i disable RS, running WP Super Cashe, it says it uses about 89% of memory (at least on the admin frontpage)

When I have RS and WP Super Cache running, the same number is 97%.

Is this what I am looking for, or do I have to make some kind of reading while editing a page? In that case, how do i do that?

I have implemented the other suggestions You made in the role options.

Again thanks for your help and patience!

That plugin should also put a memory usage message in the footer of the edit page. If not, you could try WP-Memory-Usage.

Yup. In the footer of the edit page it says "Load 32.77 of 32M" with the admin user.

And now again I cant even edit with the other "scoped" users. Could it be that this monitoring app is enough to "tip it over"?. I think I will have to get new hosting.

I have a synology NAS with PHP running and 128M as limit. I will clone the page and se how it works there. I have several WP installs on the NAS for testing. The one with the heaviest theme only uses 4%.

And one more thing.. Sorry for bothering You.

Only the admin get the visual editor when trying to edit the page. All others only show html. Any good explanation?

I have since my last post figured out that disabling WP Super Cache makes the visual editor come back to the users. Does anybody know how to it work wiht WPSC turned on?

It may be that your're running out of memory before the admin footer outputs javascript used by the visual editor.
