I'm working on a site for a client who wants to use Wordpress as a CMS for classes/courses. Most of the pages and posts need to be restricted to registered "students", but there are a few pages open to all, i.e. the home and about pages.

Role Scoper has been of immense help to me. I can limit professors and students to their classes only, and the professors only see their own categories and posts in the back-end. I'm not using RS roles, though, just WP roles. It didn't make any sense to the client to assign a professor to "Post Author" role. I used Role Manager to create a "Professor" role and this is working much better.

But I've run into a big problem. I logged out once to view the site, and to my astonishment, I got a boatload of "Page not found" errors. Hadn't had this problem before. Everything was fine logged in. After doing the usual plugin troubleshooting, I found that the problem was Role Scoper. I reset all my options to default (not too bad) and went through them.

Very interestingly, it's the "Role Type" option on the Advanced tab giving me so much trouble. When I enable "Multiple RS Roles" and log out, I can see my unrestricted pages fine. But when I enable "Single WP Role" and log out, everything turns into Page Not Found and my navigation bar vanishes. So far I have not found any combination of options that let me use "Single WP Role" and still view my open pages anonymously.

I can't use Multiple RS Roles. I can handle it, but the client can't, and frankly it's too much clutter when I'm assigning roles to dozens of users. I don't want to choose from six different options. I want to choose from "Student" or "Professor."

Thank you for your help! Role Scoper has been a lifesaver. I used to have six different plugins to get what I want, and now I just have the one. I don't want to go back!
