Hi Kevin!  I am having trouble with my roles and am hoping you can help.  I am trying to do the following:

  • Role group which can Contribute (add new pages, edit pages) in a specific section of the site only.  This group cannot publish either new or updates to pages.
  • Assign any page parent within their allowed section.

Problem:

  • When I have the permissions set correctly (at least I think they're correct) my contributor cannot assign any parent in that section, they get a very limited list.  I haven't yet figured out the reason for the items on the list.
  • When I assign them as a page associate and unrestrict that role, they can assign any parent in the site.
  • I'm looking for something in between!

Is there a way to do this?

I should say we have done a ton of role customization, so if there is a correct RS configuration I may need to reset everything and start from scratch.

Please let me know.  Thanks much!

Can you let me know if you are assigning your Page Roles with this understanding? Since you only want some pages to be selectable, the Page Associate role will need to be assigned per-page via Roles > Pages (not as a General Role).

Yes, I had tried all sorts of things, so it's all a little blurry, but I do have this understanding.  The page associate role doesn't seem to be the answer, as it handles the parent's correctly but it does not allow them to edit any of the pages in the associated section.  Right now I have them set as a page contributor, and everything works except for the page parent.  I would like them to be able to both edit any page in their section as well as assign any parent in their section.

Thanks much!

Oh, so within their section, they should be able to select any page as parent or edit it for revision.

That's not currently supported via a page-specific Role assignment. As it stands now, you would need a "Section" taxonomy for Pages. Then you could assign the "Page Associate" role for the desired section, in addition to whatever Page Contributor roles they have for the moderated editing.

If that's not workable, within the next week I might find a few minutes to give you a backdoor to make any user-revisable page selectable as parent.

Actually, if you don't mind maintaining separate group memberships for page revising and selection, this should work:

* create a "Section A Revisers" group (Users > Role Groups)

* create a "Section A Selectors" group

* give one group a Page Revisor role for appropriate pages, the other group a Page Associate role for the same pages

* make any user a member of both groups

Thank you Kevin!!!  You absolutely ROCK!!!  Your solution of two role groups worked perfectly, and I don't think I would have ever thought of such a thing!!  Thank you so much!!

I have one other question for you relating to this.  The page parent dropdown doesn't show a heirarchy, is there a reason for that?  This site is going to be pretty huge, so having that heirarchy would be a really nice feature.

Thank you again!

Glad to hear it worked for you. For better hierarchical ordering with a partially visible page tree, try turning on this RS option:

Roles > Options > Features tab > "Pages Listing" > "Remap pages to visible ancestor"

Ooops, I spoke too soon!  We are experiencing one issue with this configuration.  If we enter title and content and then try to change the parent from the default (section main page) it doesn't change, the permalink doesn't change and neither does the parent.  Any clue why that would happen?

Your suggestion on the heirarchy was fabulous!!

Thanks Kevin!

Somehow, in answering the question about Page Parent selectability, I forgot that this was for the "edit for revision" scenario. Although Page Parent revisioning is a longstanding feature request, it is not currently supported by Revisionary due to database schema logistics.

So from my viewpoint, the "successful" display of the Page Parent dropdown is the actual bug here.

Post Title revisioning is a supported feature, and I have just uploaded a fix for that. It should be available here as the "Development Version" (1.1.6-dev) within the next few minutes.
