Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error

New installation of Wordpress 3.0.1

Supporting infrastructure provided by latest MoWeS Portable II (a WAMP that provides Apache, PHP5, MySQL)

Installed on a flash drive

Windows XP with all updates installed.

This was the first plugin installed. Role Scoper activated OK but the site went away! That is, when the browser was pointed to the Wordpress site it simply displayed a blank page.

Removing the Role Scoper folder from the plugin folder brought the site back.

Then I upgraded Wordpress to 3.2.1

Put the Role Scoper folder back into the plugin folder and when I tried to activate I got "Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error"

I have since installed several plugins and have had no other problems with Wordpress or any other plugins.

Is this a known problem?

No, I haven't seen or heard of such problems. Can you paste any recent entries from your PHP error log?

Also, what RS version are you running?

The current RS version shows no glaring failures on my WP 3.0.4 test site.

What is your PHP memory limit?

OK — its time to show my ignorance a bit here.

The only error log entrys I could find that seemed useful are

From Apache access log today right after I tried to enable again:

  • 127.0.0.1 - - [27/Jul/2011:13:25:33 -0600] "GET /wordpress/wp-admin/plugins.php?error=true&plugin=role-scoper%2Frole-scoper.php&_error_nonce=989251bf52 HTTP/1.1″ 200 33493
  • 127.0.0.1 - - [27/Jul/2011:13:25:44 -0600] "GET /wordpress/wp-admin/images/menu.png?ver=20100531 HTTP/1.1″ 304 -
  • 127.0.0.1 - - [27/Jul/2011:13:25:44 -0600] "GET /wordpress/wp-admin/images/wp-logo.png?ver=20110504 HTTP/1.1″ 304 -
  • 127.0.0.1 - - [27/Jul/2011:13:25:44 -0600] "GET /wordpress/wp-admin/images/icons32.png?ver=20100531 HTTP/1.1″ 304 -
  • 127.0.0.1 - - [27/Jul/2011:13:25:44 -0600] "GET /wordpress/wp-admin/plugins.php?action=error_scrape&plugin=role-scoper/role-scoper.php&_wpnonce=989251bf52 HTTP/1.1″ 200 -
  • 127.0.0.1 - - [27/Jul/2011:13:25:44 -0600] "GET /wordpress/wp-admin/plugins.php?action=error_scrape&plugin=role-scoper/role-scoper.php&_wpnonce=989251bf52 HTTP/1.1″ 200 -

and from Apache error log from yesterday (I see no error message there today)

I guess I don't know how to tell what my PHP memory limit actually is   ;-(

However, in my php.ini file I have the following

memory_limit = 128M

So I guess it was intended to be 128MB.

I hope this helps.

I don't have any experience with MoWeS Portable. If this is a server compatibility issue, I won't be able to pursue it anytime soon.

A number of plugins are available to to determine your actual PHP memory limit and usage. I've used TPC Memory Usage and PHP Memory Indicator.
