Problem with pages / groups

Hi, I've been having this really weird problem and any help would be hugley appreciated.

I have this sort of tree of restricted pages and I have a group assigned to it as editors. Now the problem is that when a member of this group edits one of these pages the group is immediately unassaigned to the page!!

So the group can't see the page much less edit it anymore. Now, if after that I log in as admin and assign the group to the page again I can edit the page just fine with the members of the group without any problems. Thing is, the same thing keeps happening to the subpages of that page.

I suppose I can go page for page, edit it with a member of the group, and then reasign it with the admin and that would fix it. But I have a lot of pages and I don't want to have go through that.

Any idea what could be happening?

I haven't been able to reproduce this. Can you give me any more details, such as:

  • Are the group role assignments for a custom group or a WP Role group?
  • What is the user's basic WP role?
  • Are you losing the Page Parent setting when this error occurs?
  • Do the group-based editors see the "Editors" metabox in their Edit Page form?
  • What settings do you have in Roles > Options > Features > Content Maint > "Roles and Restrictions can be set" ?
  • Does Administrator see any difference in the Role assignments or Restrictions after re-assigning the group role?
  • Does the group-based editor see any difference in the Edit Page form after the group role is re-assigned?

Hello Kevin, sorry for not replying sooner but I've been crazy busy with work.

Let's see

Are the group role assignments for a custom group or a WP Role group?

For a custom group. Haven't tried with a WP group.

What is the user's basic WP role?

All the users that seem to have the problem are Suscriptors (that's everyone except the admin).

Are you losing the Page Parent setting when this error occurs?

Nope.

Do the group-based editors see the "Editors" metabox in their Edit Page form?

What do you mean the "Editors metabox"?

What settings do you have in Roles > Options > Features > Content Maint > "Roles and Restrictions can be set" ?

By Administrators only.

Does Administrator see any difference in the Role assignments or Restrictions after re-assigning the group role?

None that I can tell.

Does the group-based editor see any difference in the Edit Page form after the group role is re-assigned?

None.

To reproduce the mistake try this:

  • Create a private page.
  • Create another private page with it's parent page set as the first page you created.
  • Restrict the first page and it's sub-pages (both checkboxes) for every role.
  • Create a custom group with one member in it.
  • Assign the role of Editors to this group for the first page you created and it's sub-pages.
  • Log in as a member of the group and edit the second page.

What should happen next is that you immediately get "kicked out" of the Edit Page form because that user's group just lost the Editors role on the page.

If that doesn't happen it's something in our wordpress :-/.

… I got the same issue, using wp2.8.6 and rs 1.0.8Differnces: I assigned Edifor restricted pages to users (not groups) that are usually Post Authors.

Got an email last night from one user, that edited a post and lost permissions, when looking it up in the role management he lost the Editor rights for the edited page.

The page is also a sub page of one the user is also assigned to as Editor.

May WP 286 be the root of all trouble?

Any help is appreciated as thethis error renders the whole plugin rather useless for me!

Aaaaaaaaaaargh!

I don't think WP 2.8.6 is the problem. I'm using 2.7.1.

How is your "Roles and Restrictions can be set" option set in Roles > Options > Features > Content Maint ?

Is your Role Type set to "Multiple RS Roles"?

What role selection boxes does your group member see in the Edit Page form? Any?

Are your role definitions or RS Options customized at all?

Do you have any Default Roles or Default Restrictions defined? See Roles > Pages and Restrictions > Pages.

Can one of you set me up as a group-based page editor on your blog so I can see the symptoms myself? You could send the login info via contact form.

By Administrators only.

Is your Role Type set to "Multiple RS Roles"?

Yes it is.

What role selection boxes does your group member see in the Edit Page form? Any?

None. Isn't that what the "Roles and Restrictions can be set" option is for?

Are your role definitions or RS Options customized at all?

I don't think we customized the role definitions, but we did change some stuff in the RS Options.

"Supress "Private:" Caption" is set and "Include Private Pages in listing if user can read them" is unchecked.

Do you have any Default Roles or Default Restrictions defined? See Roles > Pages and Restrictions > Pages.

I don't think so.

Can one of you set me up as a group-based page editor on your blog so I can see the symptoms myself?

Already done. I sent the info via the contact form. The page you should try to edit is the one named "pag2″.

The site is in spanish, I hope you don't have a problem with that.

Als settings were unchange the time the phenomenon occurde first time. I changed this option due to thinking it could help. No further edits took place since then, so no news here.

Is your Role Type set to "Multiple RS Roles"?

Yes

What role selection boxes does your group member see in the Edit Page form? Any?

see uppermost answer

Are your role definitions or RS Options customized at all?

Yes, I had the user in General Roles >Modify Role Assignments for pages set to Page Associate.

Actually one of the problems is I can't say what the author did, nor can't he. I haven't reproduced the failure also, so I don't know whats going on.

I have the feeling that in fact the Page Associate Role could have led to a situation when the user moved a page out of his own scope and lost it that way, unable to reach or edit it anymore. Possible?

Thanks

Michael

I worked with ElijahSnow to confirm a fix for this bug. The fix is included in Role Scoper 1.1-RC1
