This is a newby question but how do I set roles/restrict access for the Public/Anonymous user?

If you have the Reader role restricted for a Page / Post / Category and you want to enable anonymous users to read it while continuing to hide it from logged Subscribers, you can assign the corresponding Reader role to the [Anonymous] group.

Since this is not a typical configuration requirement, that group will not be available until you add the following to wp-config.php:

define( 'SCOPER_ANON_METAGROUP', true );
