Role Scoper noob question — restricting subpages

Role Scopers:

I'm intrigued by the potential of this plugin for managing our soon-to-go-live wordpress site, and I had what I'm hoping is an easy question:

I would like to restrict an RS group to creating a page which is a sub-page of a "master" page, with the following restrictions: 1) the user can ONLY edit pages they have created (so other pages under the "master" page should not be editable by the user) and 2) the user CANNOT edit the "master" page.  How do I configure RS to do this?

Another question — is there any way to limit the NUMBER of pages an RS group can create?  E.g. if you are member of group A, you can only create 5 sub-pages of the "master" page.

Thanks!

  1. Make sure each user in the group has a WP role less than Editor (Subscriber is okay if they don't need any blog-wide posting capability).
  2. Go to Roles > General and give your group a General Role of Page Author
  3. Also give your group a Page Associate role for the "master" page. You can do this via Roles > Pages, or via the Associates tab in the "master" page edit form.

Not currently. That request has come up once or twice before, and I will put it in the "potential todo" pot.

Hmm, so I followed your instructions, and when the "restricted" user who is part of the group I made goes to create a subpage, the default parent page is the correct page that I wanted to set, but when I go to publish, I get this error:

The page "[new subpage]" cannot be published because you do not have permission to associate it with the Main Page. Please select a different Page Parent and try again.

What's strange is that this was set to be a subpage of the page I created, not the main page.  But once this error occurs, I return to the editor and the only parent page I can select is the Main page.  Thoughts?

You're running RS version 1.0.8?

Okay, I reproduce that error with RS 1.0.8 but not in my 1.1 development code.

Will see if I can come up with a simple backport for you. If not, it will be fixed in the 1.1.rc which I'm trying to get finished off within the next few days.

That fix must have been a pleasant side effect of some other change I made; since I'm not easily locating it I will just let you know when the 1.1 release candidate is available.

Just checking in to see how the next version is coming along — if you need a beta tester, I'd be happy to help.  We can't really get our website live until I have some way of restricting subpages :)

The wait is over!

Role Scoper 1.1-RC1 is now available, and any feedback is appreciated.
