set_current_user error with no other conflicting plugin

Hi, there,

I have searched on this topic but the answers I've found don't quite help me!

On activation, I received this error:

Role Scoper cannot operate because another plugin or theme has already declared the function "set_current_user" or "wp_set_current_user". All posts, pages and links are currently hidden.
Please remove the offending plugin, or deactivate Role Scoper to revert to blog-wide Wordpress roles.

The problem is, I can't find where the conflict is. I've gone into my Plugins editor and searched for "set_current_user" in both activated and non-activated plugins and the only plugin I've found it in is Role Scoper. It's also not in my theme; it's a custom one that I've designed myself, so I know it's not there.

I know this might be a long shot, but just in case you're aware of plugins that may conflict, here's what I currently have activated: Akismet, Exec-PHP, Google News, mailto:staff, maintenance mode, NextGENGallery, Role Scoper, Text Control, To Do List, Wordpress.com Stats and WordPress Auto Upgrade.

Any idea what I could be doing wrong? Could set_current_user be lurking in another file in a plugin folder rather than in my Plugin editor? Any help you give would be gratefully appreciated - I'd love to get this working!!

My next investigative step would be to download a copy of your entire plugins folder and text search it for pluggable.php

If a plugin forces early inclusion of that file, the set_current_user and wp_set_current_user function definitions come along for the ride.

Aha! Pluggable.php is called in maintenance-mode.php!

Thanks so much - I'll deactivate that now so that I can get going on Role Scoper. :) It's a shame to lose Maintenance Mode, but of the two, Role Scoper is more important in this case!

I also discovered that maintenance mode caused this problem. While the previous poster was happy to lose maintenance mode, I'm not so keen. I really need it to redirect people to a signup page for when the site is ready to roll. In the meantime, I need role scoper to set things up for my current and new users.

Is there a workaround to enable me to use your plugin with maintenance mode?

Another request: could you have a prominent link to a page that lists

a) plugins that clash with role scoper

b) links to solutions on this forum that you've proposed before ( I saw one earlier for calendar plugin… I wish you had one for maintenance mode Cry )

thanks

oh… just found stuff under Other Notes on the plugin page on Wordpress.org at

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/role-scoper/other_notes/

although I note there's nothing there about the calendar plugin mentioned somewhere in these forums.

brilliant plugin by the way… it's flexibility is its strength and why I switched from role manager and capa

for anyone else having trouble using the plugin maintenance mode with role scoper, you could switch to this much more flexible and customisable alternative:

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-maintenance-mode/

I'm now a happy man with role scoper working and the blog closed for maintenance Cool

Good call; I'm putting those on my ToDo list.

Glad to hear you found a solution.
