Thank you Kevin for Role Scoper!  My web programmer installed it on my site, http://www.styleseendaily.com.  I am looking forward to having authors/contributors uload articles — text and jpeg photos — and submit for me to edit and post.  

Here are my questions, I hope they are easy to answer:

1.  For the above needs, should it be CONTRIBUTOR or AUTHOR?

2.  If it IS contributors, how can CONTRIBUTORS upload photos?  I do not see an image button for them?  Also, how so I remove comments from showing under CONTRIBUTORS?  

2a.  I see an image button for AUTHOR — but then it also displays my "Blog Stats"  – if I go with AUTHOR for this, how do I remove "Blog Stats" from appearing under the dashboard?  Also, how do I remove comments from showing under AUTHORS?

1. With the default (and conventional) role definitions, Authors can publish new posts and edit their own published posts. Contributors can only submit new posts which are then reviewed and published by an Editor or Administrator. You should decide which fits your usage.

2. By default, Contributors cannot upload files or photos. You can add this capability as follows. Go to Roles > Options > Role Defs tab. Under "Post Contributor", check the "Upload Files" checkbox and the "Sync WP Contributor" checkbox. Click the Update button. (Note that other plugins such as Capability Manager can also make this change).

2a. I suggest using the Adminimize plugin to remove unwanted dashboard elements per-role.
