Users cannot see their own media unless admin

I'm experiencing an issue where some users cannot view files that they have uploaded to the media library, even when the file is attached to a post that the user can edit. This can affect any user below the Administrator level, although not every user is affected.

If a user is in the Post Edit screen, he can upload a file and insert it but he cannot see it afterwards in the library even though it is visible to Administrators.

I am using Role Scoper 1.0.8 with Capability Manager 1.2.2 and I have added the code snippet to wp-config.php in order to uncheck "Filter Uploaded File Attachments"

Thanks!

Have you noticed any pattern for which posts are affected in this way? Any relation to Category (or Category Restrictions you may have set)?

That setting only pertains to filtering the actual file request - not the display of an attachment in the Media Library. If a failure in that filtering was your issue, your uploads would be listed in the Library, but would have a blank thumbnail and/or could not be viewed. Is that the symptom, or are they totally unlisted?

It happens even for posts within categories that the user has access to edit. A few scenarios:

1. User uploads photo from Media->Add New. Admin can view this file in the site-wide media library but user cannot.

2. User uploads an image from Post->New Post and can insert into the edit pane right away after upload. Once the post is published, the user can edit the post (incl. the images) but the media library is empty.

Looking again, I've noitced a problem with the attachment of the file to the post. After publishing a post with an image, the file appears in the media library (visible to admin but not post author) without any posts attached to it.

I also have this issue with RS 1.0.8 and my users are primarily dealing with pages. One of my users uploaded a PDF via the Media Library to add to a page as a link. She is an editor with all the default privelages of a WordPress editor (meaning she can edit all pages). Once she adds the link to a page, that PDF is no longer visible to her in the Media Library. I had her try adding a new image to a page and the same result happens. I as an administrator can still see all the assets in the Media Libary even though those particular images do not display that they are attached to any page.

The only Role Scoper settings that I have implemented are the settings for Subcribers for:
Enabling a User to Edit Specific Page(s), and Nothing Else

Sounds like a similar thing is happening with that scenario (for suscribers) where as soon as my editor assigns the asset to a page, then that asset is no longer availble on the Media Library (for them to see and thus unable to use). Anyway to stop this from happening to any non-admin-level role other than Suscribers? Actually, and it's probably a strecth, is there any way to disable this behaviour completely? I actually have a situation (my WordPress site is for a school where only admin staff and faculty would edit the site) where it would be okay for all users/roles to be able to see and be able to use any asset within the Media Library. For example, multiple teachers could make use of the same field trip image or announcement PDF.

Regards!

I have uploaded a patch for RS 1.0.8 Media Library filtering. It contains the two edited files which fixed Josh's issue. File copying directions are in the .txt file contained in the zip.

Sorry I'm not presently able to provide this fix in a more elegant way. Your configuration sounds different, so let me know if this does not correct your symptom.

Hi Kevin, I finally got around to trying your patch and it seems to have fixed the issue so that an Editor is allowed to see all the assets in the Media Library again with Role Scoper activated. Thank you for that!

However, I think something else has come up due to the patch which I don't recall happening before. A Subscriber (which I have restricted to be able to edit a specific page) can no longer see any asset that: a) either they have not uploaded themselves to the Media Library or b) that was placed on their page by an higher-level role, even ones that are unattached to any page or post. From what I recall, before the patch, a Subscriber could see all unattached media. But at least this issue, I can still get by with the behavior for my users.

Regards!

The behavior you were counting on was actually a bug in that it ignored the Role Scoper Option "Non-editors see other users' unattached uploads". Now that your Media Library filtering is working correctly, your Subscribers should only see their own unattached uploads unless that option is set.

Hi Kevin, the first post of this topic is exactly my problem. The user can see his upload in Media Library but when he clicks on, it's going to the address : blog_home/?attachment_id=995 and if the user is administrator he can see the description and a link to the upload otherwise he just see

Not Found

Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn't here.

I have installed the 1.1.5 version of role scoper.

Can you tell me more about your configuration… WP roles of affected users, pertinent RS roles or restrictions, etc?
