wp_list_pages problem with excluded pages

I wanted to use this plugin mainly to allow a user with the role of "author" to edit a particular page - however, the side effect is that now my main navigation is all messed up.

My main navigation is supposed to show a depth of 1 and excluding a handful of pages. I'm not quite sure what the plugin is doing but I THINK it's made the navigation show the excluded pages AND then also showing the subpages of (just) those excluded pages. Does that make sense? Is there a setting I'm missing to tweak so it doesn't do this?

Here is the main navigation code:

wp_list_pages('title_li=&exclude=230,98,74,198&depth=1' );

(If you need to see the site I can send to you offline - it's a password protected test area)

This may be related to the same issue as I posted here.  The Simple Section Navigation widget uses wp_list_pages with custom exclusions.

Is that a plugin? I'm not using a plugin by that name - and my site doesn't use widgets. Here are the plugins I'm using:

Advanced Expert
Dagon Design Sitemap Generator
Lightbox 2
PageMash
The Attached Image
WP Email
WP Print

The only one I could see a possible conflict with is PageMash - but pagemash isn't causing the problem. With all those plugins activated - the navigation is fine. When I activate Role Scoper, the navigation shows all those other pages (that it's not supposed to)

Try changing your exclude argument to exclude_tree.

I was offline yesterday, and about to leave for a family reunion in a few minutes. It does sound like I'm ignoring the depth argument in your case; will check into that as soon as possible.
