WP Plugin Competition Entry: Role Scoper 0.9.18

Which news is more exciting: Role Scoper’s entry in the weblog tools collection WP Plugin Competition, or the fact that I have finally produced some documentation? Comments are welcome.

Yes, this download includes a Role Scoper Usage Guide. This is also contained in the download file. The document will still require chewing and may cause indigestion or a severe headache because I wanted to discuss some important concepts before cutting right to step-by-step instructions. Throughout the next week I will revise the online copy more, making it gentler and more complete.  Update: The Usage Guide now contains a How To section with step-by-step instructions. Currently read access configuration is covered, with category management, editing and page association to be covered in future document revisions.

Additional good news for current users is the eradication of a few more bugs in Role Scoper 0.9.18:

  • fixed: with WordPress 2.6, abrupt logout and inability to log back in due to a perpetually failing redirect caused by a double slash in the redirect URL
  • fixed: PHP warning due to conflict with Recent Posts plugin, and possibly others that trigger a second posts_results filter
  • fixed: removed “edit_private_” and “delete_private_” caps from Post Author, Page Author role defs (change log in 0.9.18 download incorrectly cites “Editor” roles)
  • fixed: PHP warning in WP 2.2 (due to non-array return value from wpdb->get_col).

Thanks to Richard and Sören for bug reports.

The downside of all this 11th hour debugging…

Although I did e-mail my plugin to the Competition address in time, the documentation could be better and my Plugin Blog post ticked in at 12:02 ET for an post date of “July 11”. Not quite the ideal showing, and at the moment I’m too worn out to make the Competition post really shine. You can help me in my weakened condition by leaving an experienced comment and rating on Role Scoper’s Plugin Competition Post. Be sure to check out all the other great plugins too.
